Eva Mendes is in talks to join Nicolas Cage in Werner Herzog’s remake of Bad Lieutenant for Nu Image/Millennium Films.

Variety reports Billy Finkelstein has written an updated script for the film – which is based on the 1992 movie that featured Harvey Keitel and was directed by Abel Ferrara from a screenplay by Ferrara and Zoe Lund.

Edward R. Pressman is handling producing duties on the remake with Stephen Belafonte. Alan and Gabe Polsky handled the finance development of the film and are set to also produce. Shooting will take place late this summer.

Nu Image/Millennium’s Avi Lerner, Danny Dimbort, Trevor Short and Boaz Davidson are handling executive producing duties with Elliot Rosenblatt and Alessandro Camon. Randall Emmett and Cage’s Saturn Films will also serve as producers on the film.

The original film (which had an NC-17 rating) followed Keitel’s corrupt cop as he investigated a nun’s rape. Keitel’s character was a depraved New York police officer who was heavily involved with drugs, gambling, sex and stealing.

Mendes and Cage shared the screen together in the action flick Ghost Rider. Mendes will return to the screen in ensemble comedy The Women. She also has a role in Frank Miller’s The Spirit.
